“I think it’s just an unavoidable truth: Barack Obama isn’t the great Hope he lead us to believe he was. He’s a weak negotiator, he’s a corporate tool, he doesn’t care at all about the least among us, and he isn’t willing to fight for anything. This president isn’t the guy I supported during the election, and he is a tragic failure for progressives.”—Wil Wheaton
Next week is “Shark Week" on Discovery Channel. While I do enjoy watching sharks on TV, I find their sometime-prey, dolphins, more interesting. This week, there was a thought-provoking letter in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology that explored how dolphins heal from shark bites that would be fatal to many other species, including humans. Author Michael Zasloff, a professor of immunology at Georgetown University, wondered how dolphins survive huge shark bites without bleeding to death or falling victim to infection from the many bacteria in sharks’ mouths. Not only do dolphins recover from “basketball-sized” bites, they regenerate the missing flesh and heal over with no scarring or sign of injury. “That’s impossible,” Zaslofftold ABC, “truly impossible.”
…a group of men spotted the couple riding together in a car, yanked them into the road and began to interrogate the boy and girl. Why were they together? What right had they? An angry crowd of 300 surged around them, calling them adulterers and demanding that they be stoned to death or hanged…“What we would ask is that the government should kill both of them,” said the father, Kher Mohammed.
without the backing of the 25% of Americans who believe in a literal 6 day creation, think that Gay people choose to be Gay, and believe everyone except them will go to Hell when they die, because they didn’t ask Jesus to accept them.”
insomnia seems like it has some sort of glamorous aura surrounding it because it’s somehow become associated with neurotic virtuoso authors and artists as if not being able to sleep comes hand in hand with genius. i’ve seen droves of shitty teenagers doing this pathetic act where they simultaneously complain and brag about how they’re “so tired” and “just can’t sleep” so they just stay up all night and write god awful poetry about fog and black sweaters. insomnia isn’t poetic or beautiful in some dark death to smoochy ass backward way. insomnia is watching the same episode of family guy you saw 4 hours ago until you think you’re tired enough to sleep but as soon as you lay your head on your pillow you have a panic attack and throw up. it’s sitting in a temp agency waiting room at noon and having auditory hallucinations while trying not to have liquid shit explode out of your ass. it’s having your doctor tell you he won’t see you anymore because he thinks you’re addicted to ambien and it’s emotionlessly jacking off. it’s pathetic, unfortunate, and annoying. at least i’m not bitter about it though.
The rhetoric over raising the debt ceiling has become increasingly harsh as Democratic and Republican congressional leaders trade barbs back and forth. But as the U.S. inches closer to defaulting on its debts for the first time in history, criticism of Congress is starting to come from beyond our own borders. From France and Germany to China and India, countries around the world are angry that American politicians play with the possibility of a U.S. default like a yo-yo with little regard for the international economic system that depends on American solvency.
At issue are comments Dean made on his own radio show last spring:
“Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America. This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination … If America won’t enforce the laws, God will raise up a foreign enemy to do just that.”
Maddow, the lawsuit says, took those comments and ran with them, claiming that Dean was essentially advocating killing homosexuals. Dean has issued a statement declaring his firm opposition to violence toward gays.
And since Dean has been linked to Rep. Michele Bachmann — the two have appeared at fundraisers together — Klayman claims MSNBC and Maddow are trying to sabotage Bachmann’s presidential campaign, by way of Dean.
Here is a document the USDA doesn’t want you to see. It’s what the agency calls a “technical review”—nothing more than a USDA-contracted researcher’s simple, blunt summary of recent academic findings on the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant infections and their link with factory animal farms. The topic is a serious one. A single antibiotic-resistant pathogen, MRSA—just one of many now circulating among Americans—now claims more lives each year than AIDS.
FOX News readers on Facebook started going off after Blair Scott, Communications Director for American Atheists, appeared on America Live with Megyn Kelly. Blair reports that when he returned home from his local FOX station for the interview that his voice mail was full of messages and his inbox had almost 200 hateful messages. “I can always tell when someone from American Atheists is on FOX news, because my Inbox explodes with hate email,” said Blair
This is a breaking news update: Michigan gardener Julie Bass has confirmed with NaturalNews that all charges have been dismissed in her case, including the two misdemeanor dog licensing charges the city threatened her with after dropping her “illegal gardening” charge.
”Just to make sure that I’m actually answering your question, am I willing to pursue a decriminalization strategy as an approach? No.” - President Obama
You cannot present yourself as a proponent of a public health approach while simultaneously advocating the aggressive pursuit, arrest, and imprisonment of people who might need help with a health problem. One need not come out as a supporter of marijuana legalization to acknowledge that slapping handcuffs on casual users, throwing them in jail, and branding them with criminal records is an approach we’ve already tried several million times too many. When you defend the continued criminalization of drug use, you render yourself an apologist for every dreadful consequence that follows as the crushing weight of the criminal justice system demolishes so much of what it touches…the president has ultimately become an advocate of nothing more than an incoherent and internally contradictory collection of cookie-cutter catch phrases that serve only to distract us while every problem with our drug policy gets worse under his watch
Researchers have discovered that a rainforest vine, pollinated by bats, has evolved dish-shaped leaves with such conspicuous echoes that nectar-feeding bats can find its flowers twice as fast by echolocation. The study is published today in Science.
Remember when The New York Times' David Carr made an offhand comment about Missouri and Kansas being home to “the dance of the low, sloping foreheads,” and everyone got mad at East Coast elitism? It's infuriating to feel like people are judging you based on your zip code rather than your merits, especially when those people are the ones you view as your cultural allies.
That said, this story is a perfect example of why people elsewhere look down on us. Because it’s hard to remember the last time a NYC school banned a book because someone complained it taught “principles contrary to the Bible.”
So the debt limit debate has come to this: John McCain, who you may recall was the GOP’s 2008 standard bearer, is now openly accusing conservatives of actively misleading America with their completely unrealistic demands, which he labeled “deceiving” and “bizarro.”
Once in a while, the moral insanity of the world we live in reveals itself to anyone who cares to look. One such moment came yesterday afternoon, when 27-year-old Tim DeChristopher was sentenced to two years in prison for disrupting a federal auction of oil and gas leases in 2008. The U.S. Attorney’s office went after DeChristopher because they wanted to make an example out of him, to show other activists what happens when you mess with the system.
